Twenty-seven subjects (22 active drug users and 5 comparison subjects who did not use drugs) wore short-term (½ h, 1 h, 1½ h, and 2 h), then long-term patches (1, 3, 7, and 14 day). Short- and long-term patches were identical except for duration of wear. The predominant analyte found was cocaine, followed by benzoylecgonine, then ecgonine methylester.

When this happens, they require larger amounts to achieve the same desired effects. They are also more likely to suffer physical withdrawal symptoms when they stop using cocaine.

Cocaine is a highly addictive stimulant drug. While it is sometimes used recreationally, it is illegal in the United States. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports that nearly 15% of adults in the U.S. have used cocaine at least once during their lifetime. Regular use of cocaine can lead to physical dependence, which means that people will experience symptoms of withdrawal once they stop taking the drug. At the lower pH of sweat, drugs may ionize and accumulate in sweat. In addition, drugs may diffuse through the dermal and epidermal layers of the skin (2)(3)(4). Drugs excreted in sweat may be collected with the PharmChek® sweat patch, which consists of an absorbent cellulose pad that is attached to cleansed skin with a Band-Aid®–like adhesive. Side effects of withdrawal can sometimes result in severe depression, paranoia, psychosis, or suicidal thoughts. It is important to remember that the effects of withdrawal, although intense, are not permanent.

For some people with cocaine addiction, cravings and depression may last for weeks or months. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, consuming cocaine by mouth can cause severe bowel decay.

The signs and symptoms of cocaine use can vary depending on whether a person snorts, injects, smokes or swallows the drug. Some studies have shown that cocaine psychosis affects 68 to 84 percent of cocaine users. It is usually associated with having a severe addiction to the drug and taking higher dosages of cocaine. Cocaine psychosis appears to be more common after smoking crack than after snorting or injecting powder cocaine.

Workers may accidentally come in contact with cocaine powder, which may settle on their clothes or skin. Crack houses are similar indoor locations where crack cocaine is smoked and often shared among users. In these enclosed environments crack smoke pervades the air, settling on hair and clothing, and may have been inhaled by the outreach worker.

The patch itself is relatively impervious to environmental contamination. Cocaine powder applied externally will generally not penetrate the protective layer of the patch. If properly applied, the edges of the patch are tightly sealed and cocaine powder cannot get under the patch seal.

Use of this drug became extremely popular in the 1980’s and 1990’s, and during this time span cocaine was the main active ingredient in tonics and elixirs used for many conditions. While not fully recognized at the time, many individuals who used these remedies became addicted to them due to the ease of access. You may have strong cravings for the drug and the high it brings. But the more you use cocaine, the more your brain will adapt to it. You’ll need a stronger dose to feel the same high.

Researchers formerly thought, however, that only increased heat production--through agitation and elevated muscular activity--caused this dangerous escalation. Now Crandall and his colleagues have discovered that along with causing the body to generate more heat, cocaine also prevents it from cooling off when exposed to overly high temperatures. The team tested seven healthy volunteers who had not previously tried cocaine. The subjects received small doses of the drug on inside of their noses and ingested thermometers to measure their internal body temperatures.
